ADHD is estimated to occur in 3-5% of the children and adolescents in the US and about the same % in adults. The medications commonly used to treat all ages include the stimulants like: ritalin methylphenidate dexedrine dextroamphetamine salts- Adderall, Adderall XR various types of long acting methylphenidate like Concerta, MPH ER methylphenidate patch- Daytrana and some chewable forms Non-stimulant medications used to treat ADHD include Strattera. All of these medications help the brain increase focusing and concentration, decrease distractibility and impulsiveness and may help with hyperexcitability. All of these medications have risks,benefits and both short and long term side effects that must be taken into consideration when determining the best option for you or your child. Specialty providers in psychiatry and mental health can assist with dosages and types that are best for each individual. Additional testing and referral may be required before medications are recommended.
